“Chicago is one of my favorite places.” sighed Frederick W. Sanders as he looked out of his luxury hotel suite. The reason that brought Sanders to town was to educate make up artists at the Make Up Show Chicago. Sanders is also the brand ambassador for Temptu Cosmetics. Temptu’s claim to fame is a portable air brush machine allowing make up artists to give that professional flawless look.
I caught Frederick lounging after a long flight from Vegas and chilling before the long Saturday at the show. He told me that right after he got off the plane, his services were already needed. LeAndrea Johnson, famous gospel singer had asked for him to pull her together before a concert. This is nothing unusual for Frederick, he has worked on some of the greatest singers and actresses around. These people include Phylicia Rashad and Erika Alexander of “Living Single”. He has also had the pleasure of working on two of “RuPaul’s Girls”, Jiggly Caliente and the late Sahara Davenport. Frederick is all about style. His favorite designer is Prada . “I like the cut of his suits and the name is not all over the place.” he admitted. For shopping, it’s Neiman’s , Saks, and Zara for the artist. What floored me the most was the man used to only the finest still gets a thrill when he finds something on the bargain rack. “It really is like a challenge to find a bargain.” he smiled.
Frederick’s latest obsession is the vegan movement. “It’s something I picked up in Vegas.” he said. As a result, he loves going to places like Snap Kitchen because its” all about making healthier choices. “An interesting fact, is that Sanders didn’t start as a make up artist. Originally he was a teacher. Instead of education, he started the process of becoming a lawyer. Then his life took a fateful turn. “I realized I had a natural gift. I followed my passion and found something I really enjoyed.” he smiled.
Recently, Frederick got to be in New York and helped with Hillary Clinton’s campaign. He said that since the election, there is definitely a separation of people and a need for all of us to unify. “Maybe he might surprise us, and with all these protests he might do a better job.”
He is very excited about the new foundation from Temptu.”It’s very hydrating, no sheen and a matte powder.”He also had no problem giving his opinion on beauty. He pointed out that each woman in her own way has beauty. He also addressed the popularity of society embracing the “woman of color.” “There are different shaped noses and pronounced cheeks but in each way they have their own type of beauty. I consider them all a challenge.” When asked about the most interesting celebrity he had worked with , he quickly answered with Phylicia Rashad . “She is full of advice and really embraces the characters she plays.” He has varied opinions on what mascaras he prefers. On one hand he likes Dior and YSL. When Fred is in a pinch, he will also walk into a drugstore and pull a Maybelline in the pink and green container.
In the future, Fred wants to take his education background and merge it with his make up gift. “I would love to open my own beauty school. Well whatever he takes on, it is very clear to everyone that Frederick W Sanders will continue to make the world beautiful . We are all the richer for it.
