Despite the warm temps, summer is just a memory now. Those carefree days by Lake Michigan, moshing at Lollapalooza, or barbecuing on the deck can be put in the file marked summer 2016. But at Navy Pier, summer continues. Riva caters to the discriminating diner by offering the best seafood, original dishes, and fine wines to accompany dinner. I have to say I have dined in some of the finer establishments in town and also some real holes. Tonight, the Steffani restaurant was there to impress. When we were escorted to our table ,we found find a welcome surprise There was a piece of paper with our names on it and a special menu that was created just for us.
I have always loved seafood. Red Lobster, New England, and Florida it doesn’t matter. I was so excited to indulge into this seafood fest. I picked a Moscato for the journey. I had no idea what was in store for this evening.
The lobster corn bisque was an original. It reminded me of a corn chowder my sister in law from Boston made. It was thick, creamy, and had that harvest feel to it. The bisque was filled with large kernels of corn and tiny pieces of lobster. Every mouthful was a pleasure to eat. It was good to the last sip.
Overwhelming was the only word to describe the iced container of seafood that was delivered to our table. Blue point oysters , shrimp that were the size of your fist, Chunks of Alaskan king crab, and tuna poke. were housed on a bed of ice with accompanying sauces. We also got a chance to try their highly recommended crab cakes. Scrumptious ! was the only word to describe them. It brings someone great joy to nibble yards and yards of shrimp meat and the tuna poke was filled with chunks of avocado and other spicy things. The best was yet to come.
The Seafood Feast took up an entire table and was freshly grilled. It consisted of a one pound Maine Lobster that was filled with meat. The lobster was relatively easy to open and what was really fun was to watch Jen eat real lobster for the first time. Large Alaskan king crab legs only required a seafood fork to scrape the meat from each leg. A big luscious bowl of garlic butter was brought to the table for dipping. Grilled vegetables and mushrooms proved to be the perfect accompaniment for the meal.
Only a great dessert can follow this great of a meal. There were several good choices but upon careful deliberation , we chose the big chocolate cake. Big doesn’t begin to describe it. It was the Hancock building of chocolate cakes. Towering above the plate, was five layers of chocolate genoise and butter cream. It was light and fluffy . Don’t plan on being able to finish the cake either, just safe it for later. There was that much left over.
Riva Crab House is part of the giant entertainment center known as Navy Pier. But hey, before you brush it off as a place to bring the relatives from out of town, come out and see the new Navy Pier. The ferris wheel is definitely the place to get the best view of town. There are also new attractions, the Shakespeare theatre, and great little shops. . The view from the upper dining room at Riva is spectacular and would be the perfect spot to watch the fireworks during the summer. Riva is also doing a special thing during the month of October. When you order special dishes with a pink ribbon by them on the menu, Riva donates a dollar towards helping in the fight against breast cancer. This is one other reason that dining at Riva is special.
