Chicago Rocks For HIV Again!

luuvie and karen

Once again the fashionable of Chicago gathered at the Loft on the Lake as those gals filled with “sole” Luuvie Ajavi and Karyn Lee presented their seventh annual “Rock the Red Fashion Show”. Ladies and gents dressed in their finest munched on goodies from Eclat Tapas and Kute Korture  Cookies as they watched some of the most gorgeous fashions from such designers as Dressmakers by Olivia, LH Coture, and Life in Cloths. Most importantly the girls wanted to make the crowd aware of the work that they have done for preventing the spread of HIV. It has been quite a year for these two as they ventured everywhere from trips to Haiti to meeting the Queen of Prime Time herself, Shonda Rhimes.

One of the highlights of the evening has always been honoring someone who has tirelessly spent their life in the battle of fighting and preventing HIV. This year’s  Ultimate Red Pump Rocker honoree was the executive director of the South Side Health Center, Betty  Smith. Bessie has worked there since the mid eighties. Originally the health center was to educate clergy and lay members with accurate information on HIV. The reach now extends beyond HIV prevention  and includes many other projects including housing, shelter, and mental health counseling. This woman is truly an inspiration. Another highlight was when Karyn gave Luuvie a surprise honoring her accomplishment of writing a book. Luuvie is a perfect example of another powerful and strong woman.

The hair for the show was done once again by Salon Olori with the make up by Crystal Eye Make up. Doing a fabulous job at producing once again, was the team at Benjamin Cottrell Designs . Furs were provided by Asteri Furs. Handbags by Deena Abdul Handbags, and for the seventh time music by DJ Bonsu. VIP Attendees received goodie bags complete with a gorgeous Michael Stars scarf.

Bessie Smith

Betty Smith has been a crusader in education and treating the symptoms of HIV since the eighties. This is why she was this year’s recipient of the Ultimate Red Pump  Rocker Award. As the Executive Director of South Side Help Center , she has been a crusader in the battle of HIV from 1987-2008. She is truly an inspiration.
