Chicago has become the new Hollywood. Films and no less than four series are currently in production on the streets of the Windy City. Dick Wolf has decided to take his franchise and give it a home here. With already enjoying the success of his hit “Chicago Fire, he has created a spin off . “Chicago PD ” This group of police officers are specially trained for work involving gangs and drug dealers. One of the officers, Antonio Dawson, is the brother of Gabriella Dawson. Dawson was previously a EMT with Squad 51, now she is studying to join her other brothers as a firefighter. There are many ties to “Chicago Fire”. The head of the elite crime fighting unit first appeared on the show as a villain. Jason Beghe leads the police intelligence unit as Hank Voight. Crime drama fans might also remember him as Kate Beckett’s mentor on “Castle”, Mike Royce. One of these cops doesn’t survive the pilot and another faces a family crisis. Each of the cops has a story and a mission. They all work together as a team to protect the mean streets of Chicago. Jesse Lee Soffer is Officer Halstead. He is a cop you would definitely like to meet. Like the cast of “Chicago Fire”, the cops are a family. There is ample opportunity for cross overs in these two shows. The pilot allows Hermann (David Eigenberg) and Mouch (Christian Stolte) to invite everyone to Molly’s . Beghe is a tough cop who shows his tender side in befriending a young street kid. It is this portrayal of the human side of the character that seems to bring viewers to the show. Last night’s premiere easily won its time slot against CBS coverage of the People’s Choice Awards. With the same creative team as CF, I think that the boys in blue will be around for a while. Chicago PD airs on Wednesdays on NBC.
