It is my sad duty to report the death of James Avery. He has had a long and illustrious career , but we all will remember him for one role, the blustery Uncle who had his nephew come to live with him in the NBC series, “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” . He passed away after complications of open heart surgery in Los Angeles yesterday.
Avery was born November 27, 1945 in Virginia , however he spent most of his childhood in New Jersey. Avery served his country in the Vietnam War as a member of the US Navy. He also wrote poetry and tv scripts when he moved to San Diego following his discharge.
Avery has not only worked as an actor on screen, but has also used his voice for many cartoon characters. The one that kids in the eighties will remember him for the most is the evil Shredder , archvillain of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” show.
Along with Uncle Phil, he has appeared in a lot of various roles on series. He was on “That 70’s Show” as Kelso’s trainer at the police academy. He did a heartwarming appearance as a brain dead patient’s gay partner on “Grey’s Anatomy. He had a part on “Moonlighting” as a federal agent . For many years , he was a fixture on prime time television and movies in a variety of guest star roles. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his stepson Kevin, and his mother. Chitownstarconnections gives the family and friends of James their sympathy.
And here is how we will remember him with his children Hillary, Ashley, and Carlton, and the nephew who was like a son to him Will . His wife, Vivian and family servant , Geoffrey in a picture from NBC’s “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” Uncle Phil was voted by TV Guide one of the Best TV Dads.
