That’s the trouble with holiday shows. Some of them have been over done. How many times can you really see “A Christmas Carol ?” Will its Broadway in Chicago to the rescue. The gorgeous Cadillac Palace is the place for the celebration of Christmas.
“Elf” is based on the modern holiday movie starring Will Ferrell. Buddy is a fish out of water at the North Pole who searches the Big Apple for his father. Oh and did I mention Buddy is one of Santa’s elves?
Will Blum seems to have the energy to do ten shows as “Buddy” His enthusiasm is contagious so you better watch out! He plays the role with optimism and charisma. The perfect choice to carry the show. Larry Cahn charms as Walter the father Buddy finds. His transformation is heart rendering once her realizes his mistakes (Every holiday story has this!) Julia Louise Hosack charms with her portrayal of the wife just trying to get her husband back from his mistress..his job. Noah Marlowe melts your heart as Michael, who embraces Buddy as his brother. His smile alone will melt your heart as I found out while encountering him at Magnolia Bakery while waiting to go to the theatre. What a cutie patootie! Lindsay Nicole Chambers voices what most of us single women feel as Jovie, Buddy’ love. Cynicism takes the best of her. She expresses this with her gorgeous soprano belt in “Never Fall In Love”
The ensemble is another one where the cans of Red Bull must be stocked First they have to keep up with such a charismatic lead like Blum. Next the members have to be mobile when they are on their knees in musical numbers. Standout were includes of course Santa (Ken Clement) as the narrator of this modern tale complete with pop culture references.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and most of all you’ll believe. Take your “Scrooge” to see “Elf” and they will be humming carols as they leave the the theatre!
“Elf” runs through December 15 at the Cadillac Palace for tickets and info go to http://www.broadwayinchicago.com/ or call 312- 977-1700
