Broadway in Chicago has taken two awesome movies and presented them on stage. “Kinky Boots” and “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” Both have wonderful stories and great music . Currently “Kinky Boots” is previewing in NY, but you can see “Priscilla” at the Auditorium Theatre. I was in the audience opening night and I’m telling everyone to see this fast paced, fun show!
Wade McCollum stars as Tick. Tick is a drag queen who has a desire to meet the son he has with his wife Marion . He leaves Alice Springs to be an entertainer. Along with his two “sisters Bernadette and Felicia, they travel across Australia so they can perform and Tick can meet his son. Priscilla is the bus which takes them on an adventure where they meet amazing characters like Bob (Joe Hart)
Unlike others, Bob has warm memories of performers like the “Girls” he knows how special they are. There are some touching moments between Tick and Benji, Kudos to the young man who portrays Benji, Will B. Whitesell is an amazing performer and holds him own with his adult contemporaries. I also appreciate the casting of real sized people in the ensemble. Not everyone is a size two. I applaud the three girls only known as the Divas. (Emily Afton, Bre Jackson, and Brit West) suspended high above the stage. I could only imagine how they felt.
With great songs like “It’s Raining Men” and “I Will Survive”, you will be dancing and singing along. The costumes created by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner are comparable to runway couture and they are gorgeous, but you better hurry the girls are only in the Windy City thru March 3oth.
