There are so many pizza places. Pizza is no longer considered just dough, sauce, and cheese. Now it is considered an art form and the more unusual the ingredients, the better. From sweets to vegetables, there is no end to what you can do with one of these wonderful pies.
A few weeks ago, we spent a friendly evening with the boys behind Big G’s , Jamie and Geronimo. Big G’s is another pizza place located in the Wrigleyville area. This seems to be a popular pizza spot . These boys have been friends forever and have merged their culinary talents to create one of the most innovative pizzerias in the area. Big G’s is not only a favorite of Cubs fans, it is a request for bands when they play at the Metro.
I was really impressed with Jamie and his willingness to be involved with the community. He knows how important it is to give incentives for good work. Future plans include a reward program for students where good grades are rewarded with a free slice of pizza. This is important to him because prior to being a pizza mogul, he was a Spanish teacher. “I believe that kids should be rewarded so they can take advantage of as many opportunities as they can get.”
We were treated to a virtual collage of tastes and spices. Geronimo said that the crust is a canvas and there is no limit to the number of combinations. One of their recent creations was for the popular T Box event where they took breakfast cereals and dessert toppings and made a special breakfast pizza. Anything goes because the boys love to take suggestions from customers . They had some very interesting pizzas. One of the most notorious was El Diablo , Dance with the Devil. The cheese was the spiciest cheese that they could find paired with some killer peppers. I described it with one word, Caliente! The Hispanic influence is definitely in the food. There was also one that wasn’t so spicy called “The Latin Lover.” With its delightful pico de gallo and chihuahua , it had a kick but it had more of an LA feel to it . I liked that.
Big G’s has some kickin wings too. I tend to be a little more picky when it comes to wings because I come from the land of Quaker Steak and Lube. These were not the run of the mill sauces, the chiliaki had the traditional teriyaki with a sweet chili mix. They also put a new spin on the traditional buffalo by adding mango to the sauce. They also made a heavenly homemade ranch dressing that I wanted to buy so I could dip veggies in it when I had to start my new years resolutions. Other places brag about their use of Jack Daniels is their dishes, Big G’s serves up a JD pizza with onion rings and pulled pork. You can definitely taste the whiskey in the sauce. Their one claim to fame is the best mac and cheese pizza in the city, so we put it to the test. Jen agreed with them, because they don’t skimp on the cheese. Another specialty is their lasagna pizza , the noodles are cooked right into the dough and they don’t skimp on the cheese for this one either.
Dessert pizza is a real treat here. Besides a s’more pizza , they have an apple pizza served hot with whipped creme. Heaven! And don’t forget to take home one of Mrs. Ellie’s brownies , they are probably the chocolatiest brownies you will ever eat.
Big G can give you what you want and the dough is always fresh. Ten minutes is all they need to make you one of their original pizzas. They are open late and the prices won’t take you to the bank. Big G’s is located at 3710 Clark Street, close to Rockit Burger Bar. Stop in soon for a real treat.
The best mac and cheese pizza in the city? Well we tried others and tend to agree.
