“Rock of Ages” currently playing at the Broadway Playhouse is a tribute to the great bands of the eighties. Recently I had a chance to chat with one of the cast members of the show. Danny McHugh shows his versatility by playing several parts and giving his all as an ensemble member of the high energy show. Music has always been a big part of his life. Danny told me that his biggest influences have been Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, and Gene Kelly. “My fondest memories were of me and my grandmother sitting down and watching Gene Kelly dance in “Singin in the Rain” Chicago is not new to the young performer. This will be the third time that the hit show has rolled into the Second City. Danny was first introduced to theatre when he took trips here as a child. He hails from the Twin Cities. “My first play that I saw in Chicago was a production of Much Ado About Nothing and it was awesome.” he told me. He laughed and told me that when he first arrived in Chicago , the first thing he wanted to do was go to a bar and grab a beer.
Always eager to hear what other performers think, I asked if he could get cast in his dream role, what would it be? Danny had two answers “Berger ” in HAIR and “Marius ” in “Les Miz” But Danny is proud of how far he has come. He also looks toward the future and many more theatre roles. “I’m too hyper for tv and film.” he said. His favorite number in the show is “Livin in Paradise” because it starts the show off and get him and his castmates energy up as well. I also asked what the cast thought of the upcoming movie of the musical. He told me that it is totally different then the musical and he and the other actors look forward to seeing it. “We actually got Diego Boneta to come back stage and pose for pictures with us.” Danny added.
