Thursday evening, the place to be in Chicago was the Radisson Blu. The best of the television community gathered for the 48th Hugo Awards. The Hugo Awards are an international competition that culminate in an award ceremony that honors the best television and productions from around the world.
Chitownstarconnections had the great privilege of attending the all star event. Prior to the ceremony, guests got a chance to mingle at a cocktail reception. We were so excited to see some very familiar faces like Candace Jordan and Steve Starr. It was also great to see Val and Ryan from Windy City Live. They were the hosts of the ceremony . Val looked gorgeous and Ryan as handsome as ever.
The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the Career Achievement Award. This year’s honoree was none other than Kelsey Grammer. Kelsey is currently known for his role on the Starz series “Boss” which is filmed right here in Chicago. Kelsey has been involved with the industry for over twenty years. He is most known for the role of Dr. Frazier Crane which is one of the longest running television characters in prime time history. He was presented the award by Chicago Film Festival President, Michael Kutza , Kelsey was introduced by Steppenwolf member , John Mahoney. Mahoney played Grammer’s father on “Frazier” for eleven years. A special surprise was a taped greeting from Kelsey’s “baby brother”, David Hyde Pierce. He congratulated Kelsey by adding that “Frazier brought joy into his life and thanked him for that.”
The other big award of the evening was presented to the production house OPTIMUS. They were duly honored by receiving the Commitment to Excellence Award. OPTIMUS caters to the film and television industry by doing editing, colorizing, sound, and special efffects for commercials and films. The group was presented the award by Leo Burnett exec, Chris Rossiter. Rossiter gave a comical description of each of the five partners. The audience was further entertained by a mockumentary done by the OPTIMUS group.
The HUGO TV Awards is just one event that is presented by Cinema Chicago. Other events include Cine Youth Festival, the International Summer Screenings, and in October the Chicago International Film Festival.
