It’s always sad when someone dies, especially when they are part of your youth. This afternoon I was saddened when I heard that teen idol of the sixties , Davy Jones died of a heart attack. Most of us remember watching “The Monkees” as they frolicked about . We all have listened to their hits like “Daydream Believer,” “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone.” Davy and the Monkees were definitely from another time. They were described as the American Beatles in the era of the British Invasion. They brought innocence to American as they watched the horrors of war every night on the news. Davy was a heartthrob and lots of young girls loved him. In fact, “Marcia ” Brady loved him so much that she wanted to invite him to her prom. Davy did sing at Marcia’s prom and was her date. This is the memory that most of us will have of the young pop idol.
David Thomas Jones was born December 30, 1945 in Manchester England . Davy had the desire to become a jockey due to his height. But luckily for thousands of teenage girls, fate took another turn. Seeing potential , Davy auditioned for a role in Peter Pan . This led to other roles in the long running Brit soap “Coronation Street” and “Pickwick Papers.” Next step was musical theatre which led him to America and Broadway as the “Artful Dodger” in “Oliver.”Coincidentally, Davy appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” the same night as the historical first American performance of The Beatles. Soon After, Davy was cast as the cute , lead singer of The Monkees. This is where his singing talent was developed .
He is survived by his third wife, Jessica , four daughters, and two grandsons. Chitownstarconnections gives their condolences to the family this evening. We will miss you Davy , but thanks to the DVDs and antique albums you will always be with us.
