Small Space But Big Taste… M Burger

Burgers should have personality.  They shouldn’t be just a flat piece of ground beef covered with condiments and a slab of American cheese.  If I could have a mission statement , I think this would be mine.

While shopping, we ventured downtown at ended up on Ontario Street at M Burger.  It may be small, but the burgers have got a big taste.  The name originated from a local chef, Chef Joho  , who used the French pronunciation of the word “Hamburger.” The owners decided to honor the chef by naming the restaurant M Burger.  The name caught on , and the tiny burger place was born.  Not so tiny anymore, M Burger now has four locations with the newest opening in Water Tower Place.

Entering the tiny Ontario Street location, you would never guess this to be a gourmet burger place.  But Manager Mike Herberlein says that when young families come in, that is what gives the restaurant its charm.  ” A young couple will come in , sometime later the same couple will come in again with the woman expecting and then sometime later, she will be feeding the baby their first M burger.”  he smiled with pride. “We become a part of people’s lives.”  We definitely saw this while we were there. A young mother brought in a stroller and fed her little boy some fries.   When asked about the size of the place, Mike smiled again and said. “Small space, big taste.” Now it was our turn to find out.

First we got to enjoy one of the M Burger milkshakes. Pure heaven in a glass.  Each month a different flavor is featured besides the regular  vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate. This particular month was the cookies and creme flavor.  I felt so guilty for eating real ice cream instead of the frozen yogurt my body is trained to eat.  We also tried the strawberry which reminded me of everything that is good in life. And the chocolate is made from fudge that is made right in the restaurant, I won’t elaborate after stating that fact. OOh!!

Heaven in a glass!!!!

Next came the burgers and fries.  The M Burger was the first burger that we tried.  It had a tasty sauce on the burger that wasn’t too tart. Cheese and bacon also accompanied the meat. Pretty good for a burger.

Another burger that we tried was called the Hurt Burger.  It was the burger that had a kick to it.  It had a spicy bbq sauce and was covered with monterrey jack cheese.  Yummy.   The other sandwich that is featured is called a Nurse Betty. It is named for a vegetarian nurse at Northwestern Hospital who loved to visit M Burger for her lunch .  There is also a chicken Betty that we got to try. The Chicken Betty had avocado on the sandwich which was delicious .  The fries were fresh and tasted good.

Mike and me . . .  thanks for a great burger and the next time I shop on the Mag Mile, I will be sure to stop in at the new M Burger at Water Tower Place… whether I am shopping or waiting for a show at my favorite theatre.   Have an M Burger soon!!
