For the Spangler family from Western Springs, it will be a holiday season they will not forget. They were the winners of a contest that the City of Chicago held to select the city’s holiday tree. From a field of thirty eight trees from Indiana and Illinois , three finalists were selected. The judges included the Brickman Group, the Chicago Sun Times and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. The hosts of the ceremony were Windy City Live’s Valerie Warner and and Mike Caplan of WLS-TV Other entertainment included the German all male choir , the Rheinischer Gesangverein , a performance from the cast of “The Musical, A Christmas Story” , and the combined children’s choirs of Suzuki Orff School of Music and the Chicago Urban Children’s Choir.” The crowd was also treated with a visit from Santa Claus, as he took his place during the holiday season. Finally, it came time for the Spanglers , and Mayor Emanuel and his family to join the hosts as they flipped the switch on the fifty five foot Christmas tree.
