Magnolia Bakery; Much more than cupcakes

On Sex and the City, Miranda and Carrie chatted about their love lives over cupcakes at NYC’s world famous Magnolia Bakery. Now the tasty shop blows into the Windy City this weekend. Tonight Jen and I got a sneak peak and a chance to try some of the dishes that have made them famous.  The camera may add ten pounds, but this was so worth the cheat.

Owner, Steve Abrams and his staff were so cordial. They were anxious to have us try their treats and we were honored to be the first in Chicago to sample them.  Walking into the shop located in the Block 37  area, it had a very Americana feel to it. The little tables reminded me of an old fashioned ice cream parlor.  As you entered , you could smell the goodies and be immediately transported back to the kitchens of your childhood.

Some places in town specialize in cupcakes, but Magnolia does it all. From the cupcakes that put them on the map, there is also pies, cakes, cookies, brownies, and muffins. They also have catered many events such as the Emmys , Oscars, and recently Fashion’s Night Out  as well. One of their cakes would be perfect for that special wedding. One of the special dishes that Magnolia is world famous for is their banana pudding. And tonight we got to see why. It was luscious and creamy and sweet. Not at all what is conjured up in your head when someone talks about banana pudding.  It had to be the best pudding that I have ever tried and that says a lot since I am a chocoholic .  All the treats we got to try were deeeelicious.

This is not your typical bakery. They also offer beverages and sell fun things in their little gift shop.  If you look closely among the homemade aprons, you might see the apron that Charlotte wore in Sex and the City 2. Well if isn’t, it looks like it.  You can take your goodies home in a canvas recyclable bag and also purchase t shirts in various sizes and styles. There is also cookbooks and sprinkles to give your baked goods that special touch.  Look forward to some surprises for the upcoming holidays as Magnolia is transformed with one of a kind homemade decorations .  All items are also kosher which means they make a great nosh for the New Year.   Magnolia Bakery is located on State Street in the Block37 shops. There will be special grand opening hours this weekend only. Plan to stop by soon for the taste that the stars crave .
